What do you get when you combine a dash of “mom & pop” with a good measure of magnificent meatless flavors? Seva—Ann Arbor’s answer to delicious, innovative, multicultural vegetarian cuisine that appeals to vegetarians and carnivores alike. Owned and operated by “Mom,” Maren Jackson, and “Pop,” Jeff Jackson, her husband, Seva has been a meatless mainstay in Ann Arbor since 1973.

With an inviting décor featuring handmade wooden booths and elegant stained glass amidst eye-pleasing pieces of art and a small jungle of plants, Seva is coveted by a loyal customer base throughout Ann Arbor. However, many out-of-towners who have had the pleasure of pleasing their palate with a Seva entrée travel from far and near to treat their taste buds to regular visits.

Inside SevaOne look at the menu, which is an eight-page tome of tantalizing choices, tells you why customers keep coming back for more. Filled with seasonal favorites and soups, appetizers, and entrées that change weekly, everything on the menu is 100 percent vegetarian, and half of the items are vegan or can be made vegan. Whether you’re in the mood for food that’s diverse, decadent, or down-home, each of Seva’s offerings is homemade with the freshest organic ingredients, which means that each dining experience is guaranteed to live up to Seva’s motto: “Fresh, imaginative vegetarian cuisine.”

With so much variety, you might have a hard time deciding what to order! On a warm day, wash a lunch of Seva’s yummy yam fries and Pomegranate-Beet Salad down with a refreshing juice from the organic juice bar while you people-watch from the sun-washed outside deck. For dinner, revive your spirits with a nice glass of wine from the full bar, then start off with a bowl of robust Roasted Tomato Soup before diving into North African Couscous With Chargrilled Tempeh or Roasted Root Vegetables With Citrus Vinaigrette, which can be served as a side dish or as an entrée that is especially delicious over citrus-flavored kasha. Don’t forget to save room for a slice of Vegan Cocoa Cake, a delicious dessert that has a large fan club, or the Chocolate-Raspberry-Hazelnut Torte, which pairs perfectly with a steaming mug of fair-trade, organic coffee, espresso, or cappuccino.
