Inviting patrons to “dream, eat, drink … and be One with the World,” Baltimore's One World Café is truly a vegetarian's dream come true. Considering that 60 percent of the menu is vegan and it's the only restaurant in the area where you can enjoy out-of-this-world organic vegetarian cuisine and a cold beer, what veg-head could ask for anything more?

Built from the coffee grounds up 11 years ago, One World Café started out as a “clear conscience” coffeehouse serving the finest in fair-trade java. Today the business, owned by Isabel Currey, has blossomed into a full-scale vegetarian and whole foods restaurant and catering service that prides itself on serving healthy, great-tasting food at affordable prices. Voted Baltimore's "Best Vegetarian" by City Paper and touted by Frommers.com, One World Café boasts a cult-like following of dedicated customers.

Becoming a devotee of this Charm City favorite is easy when there are so many yummy menu items from which to choose. To start your day off right, rise and shine to a hot cup of coffee or espresso and a stack of vegan pancakes topped with soy margarine and fresh fruit. If you're not feeling like something sweet but still want a treat, Chef Sue Novak's tasty Tofu Scrambler, made with her "secret dust" as well as diced onions, peppers, tomatoes, and mushrooms, is definitely worth scrambling out of bed for.

If you sleep in and miss breakfast, don't worry-—lunch is just as good! The hummus dip, veggie burgers, and quesadillas are legendary lunch favorites, and One World Café's Not Dog, served on a multigrain bun with all the fixings, is not to be missed. For a power lunch, we recommend ordering the Powerhouse—a pita packed with tomatoes, sprouts, baby greens, carrots, mushrooms, and cucumbers and topped with a tantalizing lemon-tahini sauce—and washing it down with one of the café's 100 percent real fruit smoothies.

For dinner, order up a brew or specialty alcoholic concoction and try the Thai Vegetable and Tempeh Sauté, an awesome amalgamation of mixed veggies, nutty tempeh, and rice noodles covered in a spicy and flavorful coconut-cilantro sauce. For a choice that's as healthy and hearty as it is delicious, go for the Ginger Baked Tofu, steamed veggies, and organic brown rice topped with a tangy tahini sauce. If you can't decide, maybe the weekly specials will help you make up your mind. Don't pass up Monday's pasta night (which features spaghetti with tofu meatballs), Tuesday's half-price burritos and quesadillas, or Wednesday's all-night happy hour. And remember, no matter which entrée you choose, make sure you save some room, because One World Café always offers a variety of delectable vegan desserts. For the ultimate in gooey goodness, treat yourself to a slice of its famously moist and delicious German Chocolate Cake.
