Imagine walking into a restaurant, picking up a menu, and discovering that everything on it that would normally be made with meat—chicken nuggets, tuna salad sandwiches, burgers, and meatloaf—were all vegan. Well, there’s no need to exercise your imagination when visiting Tucson, Arizona’s Lovin’ Spoonfuls café. Everything on the menu at this cozy, casual, and affordable eatery, from its Route 66 Bacon Cheeseburger to its Sesame-Chicken Salad, is 100 percent vegan. “I take the vegan issue very seriously,” says owner Peggy Raisglid. “We don’t use honey, and we only use sugar from manufacturers that don’t use charred animal bones.”
Breakfast fare includes everything you might find at a family pancake house and much more—egg- and dairy-free pancakes, waffles, and French toast plus a wide array of tofu “scrambles,” such as Denver (with “ham,” green peppers, and onions), Italian (with tomatoes and fresh basil), Mediterranean (with olives, garlic, and sun-dried tomatoes), Fiesta (with “chorizo,” vegan cheese and sour cream, green chilies, and guacamole), and the breakfast crowd’s favorite: a scramble laden with fresh spinach and earthy mushrooms.
Drop by for lunch, and you can choose from among a smorgasbord of sandwiches, such as mock chicken, tuna, or turkey; falafel; a portobello mushroom griller; or Lovin’ Spoonfuls’ hands-down most-popular menu item, the homemade adzuki burger made from adzuki beans, carrots, zucchini, corn, oats, and spices. Wash it down with a frosty shake or a fruit smoothie, which comes in irresistible flavors such as Orange-Mango Creamsicle and Strawberry Sunshine.
For dinner, critics agree that the Curried Mushroom-Walnut Pâté is the perfect meal starter. You’ll have a hard time deciding among the variety of pasta and Southwestern-inspired dishes, but you can’t go wrong with Lovin’ Spoonfuls’ signature dish—the Piccadilly Nut Loaf, with mashed potatoes, gravy, and grilled vegetables—or the deceptively simple Buddha’s Delight, a classic Asian stir-fry with a mild ginger-tamari sauce. Customers rave over Lovin’ Spoonfuls homemade “soups of the day,” such as spinach-mushroom, black bean, and curried carrot. Don’t forget to leave room for the made-from-scratch desserts, such as black forest cake, chocolate-mint mousse pie, cheesecake, and a banana cream pie that Raisglid describes as “absolutely killer.”
