What happens when Adam Penn, an ex-stock and financial analyst disenchanted with the world of finance, and Didi Emmons, a chef and vegetarian-cookbook author, join forces? A new planet is born—Veggie Planet, that is—a down-to-earth vegetarian restaurant in the heart of Cambridge’s Harvard Square, where the food is positively out of this world.

Veggie PlanetMany customers say that Veggie Planet’s pizza is the best they’ve ever eaten, and we’re sure it’s no coincidence that many of the restaurant’s imaginative pizzas are vegan. The unearthly delicious Vegan Oddlot pizza, a heart-shaped pie smothered in marinated tomatoes, spinach, tofu ricotta, kalamata olives, and fried garlic, is a customer favorite. Plain-old pizza seems passé after trying the adventurous Vegan Peanut Curry pizza, which is topped with white coconut rice, broccoli, tofu croutons, roasted peanuts, and Thai peanut curry sauce. Not pining for pizza? Any of the pizza toppings can be served over a bed of organic brown or white coconut rice. An ever-changing menu of soothing vegan soups and refreshing salads is perfect for lunch or lighter appetites.

Every day of the week, Veggie Planet serves up scrumptious vegan food, and Sunday brunch is no exception. The restaurant’s Coffee Cake of the Day, Crispy and Soft Waffles, and Homefry Tofu Scramble, with mouthwatering pan-fried new potatoes, broccoli, butternut squash, and tofu topped with salsa, are not to be missed. Had a rough Saturday night? Sunday’s Soup, which is always dairy-free, is rumored to “… heal you from all things wicked.”

Veggie Planet is making this planet a better place to be—and not just for those lucky enough to eat there. In addition to helping animals by using only vegetarian ingredients, the restaurant also supports local vegetable farmers, buys organic ingredients whenever possible, uses organic dough from a nonprofit bakery and homeless service provider, and donates a percentage of its profits to organizations working for social and environmental change.
