Palomino
Milwaukee, WI 53207 Hours Monday to Saturday, 4 p.m.-11 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Palomino is housed in a cozy, 80-year-old tavern in Milwaukee, Wis., where you’ll find some of the best vegan comfort food the Midwest has to offer. The folks at Palomino might appear to be strictly “meat and potatoes,” but after years of experience, they have found a comfortable fusion of award-winning traditional Middle American dishes and even tastier vegan versions. Not only do their vegan dishes have a large following among local vegetarians, some carnivorous customers even prefer them to the real thing! Customers feel right at home surrounded by wood paneling and pool tables in a bar-like atmosphere where the jukebox is always playing. One of Palomino’s biggest sellers is the “finger-lickin’ good” Toffalo Wings, a tofu-and-“wheat meat” take on the game-day staple Buffalo wings. The tofu is made fresh locally from organic soybeans. You can choose from a sizzling hot habañero sauce or the milder “sissy” sauce. Another crowd-pleaser is the Tofurky beer brat, infused with beer, garlic, and onions and topped off with sauerkraut and marmalade onions for a tangy, sweet-and-sour zing. If you saved room for dessert (and we know you did), try the deep-fried vegan banana split. With nondairy chocolate and caramel ice cream, chocolate sauce, nondairy whipped cream, and cherries, this sweet treat is the perfect way to top off a night out. And, of course, all the fried foods are prepared in Palomino’s vegan-only deep-fryer. Packers fans of all stripes agree that Palomino offers plenty of ways to fill up and warm up while cheering on the team. |
