Fast Food the World Can Live With

This isn’t your dad’s McDonald’s. With a menu loaded with perennial favorites like “cheeseburgers,” spicy French fries, Sicilian-style pizza, and soft-serve “ice cream,” Ope’s in Kalamazoo, Michigan, sounds like a typical American fast-food joint. What’s not so typical is that everything on Ope’s menu is nutritious, organic, and vegan.

A survey in January by SupermarketGuru.com indicated that about a third of respondents want healthier choices on fast-food menus, including lower-fat, lower-calorie, and lower-sodium foods. This wouldn’t surprise Dr. Richard Oppenlander, Ope’s founder and president, who studied diet and the effects of food choices on human health and the environment for 25 years.

Ope’s is committed to providing food that not only tastes great, but also improves your health and the health of the planet. In addition to burgers and pizza, Ope’s serves a mouth-watering Mediterranean vegetable wrap, tangy broccoli and rice-“cheddar” pasta, and hearty potato-and-corn chowder and boasts “the best fruit smoothies in Michigan.”
