Expand Your Horizons at Horizon's Café

In its first 10 years, Horizon's Café has grown from a one-man lunch counter at a natural-foods store to one of the most popular vegan restaurants in the Philadelphia area. Have one taste, and you’ll know why. Chef and owner Rich Landau pairs unique flavor combinations and exotic ingredients to create fresh, tropical fare unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before.

For starters, try the Jamaican BBQ Seitan Wings, brought to the table with a cool and creamy vegan cucumber ranch sauce, or the Toasted Nori Salad, a marinated edamame and radish salad served with ginger and wasabi vinaigrettes. The lunch crowd eats up Horizon's’ Peppercorn Crusted Pan Seared Tofu Sandwich, topped with roasted red peppers, guacamole, and tomato. For dinner, we recommend the Pacific Rim Grilled Tofu Steak, glazed with Korean steak sauce and served with a potato-edamame “mash” and gingered Asian greens, or take the Tropical Vegetable Tour, where you’ll savor exotic flavors like black bean and plantain tamales, salsa mulato, and creamy hearts of palm.

No Horizon's Café dining experience would be complete without one of pastry chef Kate Jacoby’s decadent vegan desserts. Will you have the sinfully rich cheesecake; the Polynesian Crème Brûlée, a ginger-vanilla bean custard caramelized to order; or the Kona Chocolate Torte, a warm chocolate-coffee torte served with toasted macadamia nuts, espresso ice cream, and coconut whipped cream? If you’re like us, you’ll want one of each!

This vibrant, bustling restaurant, awash in bright Caribbean colors and filled with the sounds of salsa, steel drums, and other world music, is winning rave reviews from customers of all culinary persuasions. Rich tells us that vegetarian and vegan guests often ask, “Where has Horizon's been all my life?” More than one meat-eater has said, “If I could cook like this, it would be easy to be vegetarian!”

Now you can, with one of these tempting recipes from Horizon's Café. For more tropical delights, visit Horizon's Café’s Web site to order a copy of Rich and Kate’s cookbook—or better yet, stop by the café for one of the best vegan feasts you’ll ever eat!
